Storyboard for a 15 Second Film

    Storyboard

The third exercise for UCLA’s 181A class required a storyboard for our first Quarter’s final 15-second animated film project. This exercise called for 8 to 15 storyboard panels that demonstrated our concept for the final film on 12 field animation paper.

This is not a particularly good storyboard, but I am including it as a chronicle of my UCLA class work. In this story, two creatures speak a word that results in their demise. I was trying to see how loose of a narrative structure I could use to create an animated short. I changed my idea for the final film several times throughout the course of the class as I struggled to find a narrative that I was happy with and that could easily be communicated within 15 seconds of animation.

The first Quarter’s final film project is a 15 second animated film, hand drawn on cells and shot on the crane.

This is from Fall Quarter, 2006.

    Timing with an Animated Asterisk

My second pencil test exercise for UCLA’s 181A class, Animation Design in Film and Television. This exercise focused on the following:

  • animating an asterisk on twos to create a particular rhythm
  • using a 12 frame hold (traceback)
  • exposure sheet and layout
  • Below is the layout drawing. This is from Fall Quarter, 2006.

    Bouncing Ball Pencil Test

This was my pencil test for UCLA’s 181A class, Animation Design in Film and Television. This was the first exercise for the lab portion of the class and the assignment required the following:

  • a layout drawing
  • 24 sequential drawings within 12FC
  • a ball that bounces and turns into a square
  • squash and stretch
  • animation on twos
  • I edited the original excercise so that it is mostly on twos, with a few ones and a three. Below is the layout. This is from Fall Quarter 2006.

    Europe to UCLA

Since my last post over a year ago, a lot has happened. The most significant events were last summer’s nine-week trip in Europe and our subsequent move to Los Angeles.

I was accepted at UCLA for the Fall of 2006 and am currently working on my MFA in animation. This blog will hopefully record my time at UCLA within the MFA animation program.

Below are a few of my favorite photos from last summer’s trip.
